Stars are taking to Twitter to remember Nelson Mandela, as the world reacts to the passing of the South African freedom fighter. Among them are members of 90s pop group the Spice Girls, who met Mandela in 1997 at the height of their popularity.
Melanie Brown posted a photo to Instagram of the five girls posing with Mandela. The former South African President is seen smiling at the singer as she goes for one of her "scary spice" faces. In the caption, Mel B. writes that it's "a sad day" and that she "will never forget" Mandela or the conversations they had.
Her former band mate Melanie Chisholm also seemed touched by the experience. Mel C. tweeted that while she feels "strange acknowledging somebody's passing on Twitter," she is "honored to have met the great Nelson Mandela."
I always feel strange acknowledging somebody's passing on twitter but I have to say I am honoured to have met the great Nelson Mandela #RIP— Melanie C (@MelanieCmusic) December 5, 2013
The Spice Girls met Mandela when they visited South Africa as a part of their world tour. A testament to his sense of humor, Mandela was quoted as saying at the time, "These are my heroes. This is one of the greatest moments of my life."
