LAKELAND, Fla. (970 WFLA) – State and university leaders will gather for a special launch ceremony Saturday, August 16, to celebrate the completion of the iconic innovation, science and technology building and the official opening of Florida Polytechnic University.

The ceremony will take place outdoors at 9:35 a.m. on the south side of the ‘ist’ building following remarks from university leadership and special guests, attendees will experience an actual launch. A vivid pyrotechnics display will shower the campus lake adjacent to the state-of-the-art ist building. An open house will follow. The event is free and open to the public. The open house is from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

The school is located at 4700 Research Way in Lakeland. 

Florida Polytechnic University is the state's 12th public university and the newest member of the state university system of Florida. Dedicated exclusively to stem (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), the university blends applied research with industry partnerships to give students an academically rigorous education with real-world relevance. The campus, located in Lakeland, Fla. along the I-4 high tech corridor, opens for classes on Aug. 25, 2014.
