Karla Souza Explains Her Character In Bilingual Rom-Com 'Everybody Loves Somebody'

Karla Souza, better known for her role as Laurel on ABC's How to Get Away With Murder, stars in the bilingual romantic comedy Everybody Loves Somebody. The film follows Souza's Clara, a successful OB-GYN who asks her coworker to pose as her boyfriend at a family wedding back home in Mexico.

When she gets to the wedding, her ex-boyfriend (and family favorite) suddenly shows up after disappearing from her life completely, so Clara "must decide between going back to the past or open her heart to new and unexpected possibilities."

"Yes she's a doctor, she has one night stands, but she has no idea what she's doing in her love life," Souza told On Air with Ryan Seacrest over the phone on Friday. "She thinks she does. She's become very cynical like a lot of people nowadays because of Internet dating apps and all this stuff. Everyone's scared to get in a relationship and this character is very similar. It's relatable for both men and women."

She added: "It's not just a love triangle. It's a lot about dynamics of an immigrant family living in the U.S., and again, the themes are very universal so everyone can connect to that."

Everybody Loves Somebody, also starring José María Yazpik, Ben O’Toole, K. C. Clyde, Tiaré Scanda, Patricia Bernal, and Alejandro Camacho, opens in theaters today.
