Too Much Oxygen Killed Stingrays at Tampa Zoo

TAMPA -- A Tampa zoo (ZooTampa at Lowry Park) has released the cause of death for 12 stingrays

in its exhibit.

The stingrays seemed normal when staff arrived May 27th, but when visitors arrived it was clear they were dead.

Experts who reviewed tissue samples from the dead stingrays say a supersaturation of oxygen in the tank overnight gave the rays a case of the bends.

Staffers didn't pick up on it because levels had returned to normal by morning.

The zoo says it will tear down the stingray exhibit and build a new one with more safeguards.
