State Facing Teacher Shortage As School Resumes

New programs to attack the state's teacher shortage as schools get back in session.

One program would allow people with a two-year degree to become teachers by apprenticeship according to State Education Commissioner Manny Diaz Jr.

Another program would allow first responders to join veterans in getting into teaching while working towards certification.

A third would cover current teachers getting their masters' degrees.

The biggest issue is compensation according to a new report from Florida TaxWatch which states Florida has the second lowest average teacher salaries in the nation, something Governor Ron DeSantis says lawmakers are working to increase.

DeSantis says the state has increased the average minimum salary from about $40-thousand to more than $48-thousand over the past three years.
