Back in 1988, The Macallan offered a program where a buyer could buy a cask of single-malt whisky for $6,500. A buyer who took advantage of the now-discontinued offer somehow managed to forget about his barrel purchase and left it sitting in the Macallan warehouse storage for more than 33 years. Being the kind-hearted souls they are, Macallan took the time to remind the buyer that it was still there all those years later…and that ended up giving that lucky unnamed buyer a handsome payday.
At an auction mediated by Whisky Hammer, that barrel of goodness ended up going for almost $1.3 million…which is a profit that doesn’t suck. Inside that barrel, the new owner will be able to fill 534 700ml bottles…or he could just sit on it and hope the value continues to skyrocket.
