Florida's 2019 Unclaimed Property Auction Set for Saturday

Are you in the market for a diamond ring, an antique watch, or old baseball cards?

If so, Florida’s 2019 Unclaimed Property Auction may be for you.

More than 58,000 items valued at over $600,000 are set to be auctioned off this Saturday, (August 24th) in Orlando.

The sale is made up of items left behind in bank safe deposit boxes. Once a box has been abandoned for several years, the bank sends the contents to a state vault, where items are held for another two years.

After that time, in order to save room, the items are auctioned off to the public, with the proceeds set aside for the original owner to claim.

Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis oversees the Division of Unclaimed Property, which also keeps track of unclaimed assets such as bank accounts, stock dividends and utility or rent deposits.

“Say you decided to get your degree from Florida State University, and you paid your utility deposit to the City of Tallahassee, and meanwhile I have moved back home to Miami and I’ve got a job. If you have never collected that utility deposit, it probably ended up with us.

Saturday’s auction will be held at the Orlando Airport DoubleTree, beginning at 9 am.
