Former UF Researcher Accused of Working for China on US Taxpayers' Dime

A former University of Florida researcher who used to live in Tampa is accused of defrauding the feds by hiding the support he got from the Chinese government.

The North Florida U-S Attorney's Office says 43-year-old Lin Yang hid his ties to China from UF and from the National Institutes of Health with false disclosure forms.

The feds gave Yang more than a million and a half dollars in grant money to develop a muscle imaging tool. At the same time, he received money from a Chinese program designed to steal foreign intellectual property. It's believed he also received support from a company he founded in China, which is not permitted under the grant terms.

Yang moved to China in 2019, so it's questionable whether he'll ever serve time if convicted.
