Abandoned Dog Found in Florida Goes Home to Georgia

PALMETTO -- A Manatee County animal shelter helps a dog find its owner, four hundred miles away.

The pit bull mix showed up at the shelter in Palmetto last week.

Animal welfare supervisor Steven Bell says they found a microchip and called the owner in Augusta, Georgia. She had lost nearly everything in a devastating fire and wasn't able to pick the dog named Dozer up.

So Bell drove Dozer all the way to Georgia, taking along extra food and dog bowls. The owner had given Dozer to a relative after the fire, and they believe the family member brought Dozer to Florida.

"With the microchip, she's given herself a chance to get her dog back," Bell said. Had it not been chipped, the dog would eventually have been placed with another family.
