LISTEN: Hillsborough Offers Free Spay/Neuter & More For Bully Breed Dogs

TAMPA -- Hillsborough County's pet resource center (animal shelter) is making an offer to owners of bully breed dogs, including but not limited to pit bulls.

Hillsborough is offering free spaying, neutering and other services to about 200 bully dogs whose owners reside in the county, in "Operation Pit Stop." Those include Staffordshire terriers, bull terriers, American bulldogs, Boston terriers and bull mastiffs. The dogs must be under 90 pounds and over six weeks old.

Ginette Campos with the pet resource center says up to 95 percent of dogs in their shelter are bully breeds. Her agency got the idea after hearing about a similar program in the Miami area. Hillsborough first offered the service last summer.

Campos says the services are available to dogs whose owners reside in the county. In addition to spaying and neutering, the county is offering microchipping, a heartworm test, and vaccines.

To make an appointment, call (813) 301-PETS (7387) or e-mail PRCOperationPitStop@HCFLGov.net . Campos says the available appointments are between February 12th and 23rd, and they're going quickly.
