Tampa International Airport (TPA) has commenced construction on its new $1.5 billion Airside D terminal. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on Wednesday (December 18), marking the start of TPA's first new terminal in nearly two decades. Located northwest of the main terminal, Airside D will feature 16 gates, two lounges, and new dining and retail options. It will serve as the airport's international arrivals and departures facility.
The terminal is part of TPA's Master Plan to accommodate the growing number of passengers, projected to reach 35 million annually by 2037. Currently, TPA serves approximately 25 million passengers each year. The new terminal will help manage this growth and is expected to open in 2028.
According to TPA, the design-build team of Hensel Phelps, HNTB, and Gensler is leading the project. The terminal will include a Transportation Security Administration checkpoint with the latest technology, a Customs and Border Protection facility, and a new shuttle system.
The project is funded through a combination of airport reserves, bonds, and grants. The Hillsborough County Aviation Authority Board approved $91 million for initial onsite work, which includes security fencing, concrete removal, and utility work.
TPA Executive Vice President Smitha Radhakrishnan emphasized the importance of maintaining TPA's reputation for convenience and customer service excellence while celebrating the Tampa Bay region's unique qualities.
