We are on the cusp of the rainy season which also breeds mosquitoes. And mosquito experts say South Florida's weather is perfect for mosquito breeding.
They advise protecting yourself by covering your skin with clothing and repellent. Also get rid of standing water around your home where mosquitoes breed.
To avoid a swarm of mosquitoes hatching near your home, South Florida residents are advised to drain standing water from garbage cans, gutters, buckets, pool covers and flowerpots.
Miami Dade Chief of Mosquito Control, Dr. John-Paul Mutebi, says he cannot forecast the severity of mosquito season, but they can monitor the activity with a surveillance system.
He adds that they have traps all over the county. Once the mosquitoes are captured, they can also be tested for any diseases they may be carrying.
Dr. Mutebi says there are 53-different mosquito species in South Florida, but not all of them carry diseases like dengue, yellow fever, Zika and chikungunya. Also, not all of them bite people, some prefer animals instead.
