Florida Movie Theaters Get Ready For Weekend Opening

Movie theaters across the state are reopening for the first time since March.

While some smaller theaters have reopened already, the larger theater chains have held back, including AMC.

The nation's largest movie theater company opened a number of its theaters around the nation, including some in Tampa and other areas of Florida Thursday. The chain celebrated its 100th anniversary by selling tickets for just 15 cents, showcasing older movies.

While South Florida remains in Phase One of reopening, which does not allow for movie theaters to open, several cineplexes on the Treasure Coast are opening their doors Friday. They include two in Martin County...The Regal 16 inside the Treasure Coast Square Mall in Jensen Beach and the smaller Regency 8 theater in Stuart. An AMC theater in Port St. Lucie is slated to open next week.

There are a couple of new movie releases, including "Unhinged" starring Russel Crowe, but the rest of the films that will be playing at theaters this opening weekend will be second-runs...some titles as old as "Jaws" and "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back" along with more recent films like "Deadpool" and "Black Panther."

Theaters will be mandating mask-wearing and have social distancing guidelines in place, while scattering auditorium seating, by blocking off certain seats to leave space between guests.
