Florida Gets Its Own Total Eclipse -- If You Can Wait 21 Years

TAMPA -- Today's solar eclipse won't be total in Florida. But a future eclipse will be, if you can wait 21 years.

The 2045 solar eclipse will go right down the spine of Florida, with the path of totality including Tallahassee, Gainesville, Orlando, most of the Tampa Bay area and most of South Florida from Miami north. Some areas of our state will see totality for up to six minutes. The center of totality will pass over the U.S. 27 / I-4 interchange just a few miles from Disney World.

It also includes parts of several states as far west as California, as well as much of the Bahamas, Haiti and the Dominican Republic, before ending in Brazil.

But it happens on August 12th. 2045 in the early afternoon, in the middle of Florida's rainy season and hurricane season, so cloud cover could be an issue then. Historically, for example, Tampa has a more than 75 percent chance of cloud cover on that day of the year.
