Schools around the state are discussing a change to start times.

The Palm Beach County School Board last night heard three options from the school district officials.

The changes come after Governor DeSantis signed a bill into law that mandates later start times for middle and high school students. Middle schools will not be able to start any earlier than 8 a.m. and high schools must start some time after 8:30, starting in the 2026-27 school year.

The options would have Palm Beach County middle schools starting anywhere from 8 am to as late as 10:20, while high school start times would range from 8:30 to as late as 9:15.

The goal of the law is to help students get more sleep, leading to better mental and physical health. The school district wants to hear from parents on the subject.

Several School Board members spoke out against the law, with one calling it "unnecessary."
