Treasure Coast Doctor Accused Of Stealing Fentanyl From Patient's IV

A Florida anesthesiologist is accused of stealing liquid fentanyl from an ICU patient's IV at a Fort Pierce hospital.

After observing Dr. Sasha Grek exhibit strange behavior last December, Lieutenant Andrew Bolonka with the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office says a nurse at HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital recorded cellphone video of him sticking a syringe into the IV tube and extracting the drug.

"HCA was very diligent and it was reported to law enforcement immediately."

If you think this is rare, think again...

"This is an all too common problem that we see in healthcare. It's not unique to this individual or this institution."

Dr. Lewis Nelson, a medical professor at FAU, tells CBS 12 News that it's difficult to prevent, and hospital staff must look for things like signs of impairment among physicians or nurses who may have access to a patient's room.
